People-Pleasing, Boundaries & Self-Worth Therapy in Michigan

You can care about other people without forgetting yourself.

Maybe you’ve spent a lot of time being the person others can count on.

You notice when someone is upset. You check in. You help. You listen. You try to keep the peace. You might even be really good at anticipating what other people need before they have to ask.

Being there for the people you love isn’t a bad thing.

But somewhere along the way, you may have gotten so used to paying attention to everyone else that paying attention to yourself has become harder.

You might know exactly what your partner, friend, child, parent, or coworker needs from you, but when someone asks, “What do you need?” you aren't quite sure what to say.

And saying no? That can feel even harder.

When taking care of yourself feels uncomfortable

People-pleasing can look like saying yes when you want to say no, avoiding difficult conversations, worrying about disappointing others, or feeling guilty when you set a boundary.

You may find yourself putting your needs aside because it feels easier than risking conflict or making someone unhappy. Over time, you might feel exhausted, resentful, or disconnected from what you actually want.

Therapy can be a place to slow these patterns down and understand what's underneath them.

Not so you stop caring about other people.

So you can learn how to care about other people without losing yourself in the process.

You don’t have to lose yourself to stay connected.

You can be thoughtful, generous, and loving without saying yes to everything. You can set boundaries and still care about the relationship. And you can begin making choices that reflect who you are, rather than who you feel you need to be for everyone else.

Therapy can help you build a relationship with yourself where your needs, feelings, and limits matter, too.

What we can work on together

Therapy might include:

  • Recognizing people-pleasing patterns without judging yourself

  • Learning to identify your own needs, wants, and limits

  • Becoming more comfortable saying no and setting boundaries

  • Working through guilt and fear of disappointing others

  • Practicing assertive communication

  • Building self-esteem and trust in your decisions

  • Caring about others without feeling responsible for their emotions

Let’s start with a conversation.

You don't need to know exactly what you want to change before reaching out. A free 15-minute phone or video consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, share a little about what brings you to therapy, and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
